Lakers Kick Off New Era Under JJ Redick
Before the Los Angeles Lakers hit the hardwood for their training camp, newly-appointed head coach JJ Redick decided to set the tone with a significant team gathering in the upscale neighborhood of Beverly Hills. The evening's purpose was clear: to create a unified vision for the upcoming season.
"It was kind of the first time that we all really got together as a team in one setting," Max Christie remarked, shedding light on the importance of the event.
The Lakers have set high stakes for the season ahead, beginning their first practice under Redick with a comprehensive presentation. Guided by Redick and his coaching staff, the session highlighted team values and established ground rules that are expected to be pivotal for the Lakers' success. The emphasis on unity and clear expectations seemed to resonate well with the team, particularly with seasoned players like LeBron James.
"I don't have any expectations. And that's unfair to put any expectations on us right now. The only thing that we can count on each other is how we come to practice and come to work every day," said James, reflecting a grounded yet focused mindset.
Bringing Forward a Proven Core
The Lakers are leaning heavily on the core group that carried them to the conference finals just two seasons ago. Redick's strategy involves retaining a familiar starting lineup featuring James, Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves, D'Angelo Russell, and Rui Hachimura. This experienced roster will be complemented further by a nine-man rotation that Redick plans to implement. However, the team has its share of health concerns that need addressing.
Jarred Vanderbilt, for instance, is currently rehabilitating from offseason procedures on both feet. Meanwhile, Cam Reddish was held out of the 5-on-5 portion of practice due to soreness, an indication that the coaching staff is proceeding with caution to ensure long-term player health.
Max Christie, who has recently inked a four-year, $32 million contract, has been a significant focus for the team during the preseason. His performance and contributions are being closely monitored, and it seems he's already garnered the trust of the coaching staff.
"Christie is a guy who's earned our coaching staff's trust over the last two months," Redick stated, signaling strong confidence in the young player’s potential.
Christie’s Aspirations and Readiness
Christie, aware of the expectations, appears ready and motivated to prove himself further. "I think for me it's kind of just proving myself again. I haven't proven too much as a player in this league. I've had spurts and sporadic moments where I've been really good, but I want to put a whole season together. Hopefully, I get the opportunity to do that this year," he shared, highlighting his determination and readiness for a more significant role.
LeBron James also weighed in on Christie's development and anticipated role in the team. "I think Max will be a big part of our rotation. He's gotten better and better and I'm happy we were able to bring him back in the summertime. I look forward to a bright season from him," James commented, underlining the cohesion and internal support within the team.
The Lakers appear to be combining experience with emerging talent under the guidance of JJ Redick, prioritizing a balanced approach aimed at maximizing both short-term performance and long-term potential. The initial stages of their training and pre-season preparations suggest an optimistic, yet measured approach to what could be a pivotal season for one of the NBA’s most storied franchises.
