Day 2 Developments at New England Patriots Training Camp
In Day 2 of the New England Patriots training camp, significant developments and strategic adjustments were evident under the leadership of first-year head coach Jerod Mayo. With Jerod Mayo at the helm, the team seems to be thoroughly investigating their options, particularly at the quarterback position.
Among the quarterbacks, Jacoby Brissett emerged as a key figure, securing first-team reps and appearing to be a focal point in Mayo’s plans. Brissett demonstrated his capabilities by completing nine out of 13 passes in competitive drills and two out of four attempts in 11-on-11 situations. Following Brissett in the pecking order were Drake Maye and Joe Milton III, with Bailey Zappe being notably demoted.
Drake Maye showcased his skills, completing 10 of his 12 passes in competitive drills. However, some hiccups were noted during the 11-on-11 performance, where he had a miscommunication with receiver Tyquan Thornton and a drop by tight end Jaheim Bell. Joe Milton III, selected over Bailey Zappe for competitive drills, completed four of his six passes, firmly placing himself in contention. Meanwhile, Zappe, relegated to the fourth quarterback spot, completed two of his three throws during minicamp work.
Head coach Jerod Mayo commented on the decision-making process regarding quarterback reps, stating, “We’re always going to take the mindset of we’re going to do what’s best for the organization and we’re going to try to get those guys reps so they can compete.” He added, “I don't know if that means four or three, honestly. Right now we have four quarterbacks and those guys will go out there and practice today.”
Offensive Line Rotation
In addition to the quarterback competition, the offensive line witnessed considerable rotation, particularly at the right tackle position. Calvin Anderson, Caedan Wallace, and Vederian Lowe are all vying for this critical role. While Mike Onwenu held steady at right guard, Day 1 saw Anderson and Wallace primarily filling the right tackle role. On Day 2, more variability was introduced with Lowe taking significant snaps at the position. Wallace and Anderson also contributed on the left side, adding to the strategic mix.
Receiver Reps and Defensive Performance
On the receiving end, Tyquan Thornton received increased reps and targets during 7-on-7 drills, showing his potential as a valuable asset for the team. However, Jaheim Bell experienced a setback with a drop during drills. The Patriots are also managing the cautious return of Kendrick Bourne, who attended practice but remained sidelined for active drills as he recovers from a torn ACL.
Defensively, Marcus Jones made an impact by breaking up a pass intended for Ja'Lynn Polk during the first competitive 7-on-7 period. At the cornerback positions, Christian Gonzalez and Jonathan Jones are projected to secure the boundary cornerback spots, solidifying the team’s defensive backfield.
Other Notes from Day 2
Beyond the offensive and defensive adjustments, notable moments included team owner Robert Kraft’s discussions with pass rusher Matthew Judon about his contract status and ongoing dialogue with executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf. Running back Antonio Gibson returned to practice but was limited in his activities, while DeMario Douglas engaged only in individual drills, abstaining from 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 sessions. Additionally, a poor snap from Antonio Mafi during afternoon drills with Joe Milton III at quarterback was observed, highlighting areas for improvement.
As the Patriots navigate through their training camp, the strategic decisions under Jerod Mayo’s leadership continue to shape the team’s direction. With rigorous competitions unfolding at key positions and players working to make their mark, the groundwork is being laid for a season of growth and potential.
