The Detroit Lions are eagerly anticipating the return of their standout running back, Jahmyr Gibbs, who has been sidelined by a hamstring injury. The injury occurred during a practice session earlier this month, raising concerns about his availability for the upcoming season opener.
Head coach Dan Campbell, however, has shared an optimistic outlook on Gibbs' recovery. "Our plan is to get him going next week," Campbell said, indicating they are hopeful about his progress. Gibbs is reportedly "trending the right way" as he works towards regaining his fitness in time for the Lions' Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
A Vital Asset
Gibbs proved himself to be a crucial component of the Lions' offensive strategy in his debut season. He amassed 945 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 182 carries, ranking second on the team in those categories. His versatility wasn't limited to the ground; Gibbs also recorded 52 receptions for 316 yards and one touchdown. In the playoffs, he continued to showcase his prowess, adding 144 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries, alongside 94 yards and one touchdown on 14 receptions.
The Lions are undoubtedly eager to have such an integral player back on the field. Campbell acknowledged the importance of Gibbs' health while also expressing a desire for more practice time with the running back. "Wish we had more practice with him, but as far as the health of it, he's healing and he's on schedule to be back, and get his legs back under him. And we'll see where he's at," said Campbell.
Preseason Preparations
As the Lions gear up for their final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, the focus remains on getting key players ready for the regular season. In addition to Gibbs, several other players are on the path to recovery and could potentially return to action soon. Tight end Sam LaPorta, offensive tackle Dan Skipper, guard Kevin Zeitler, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, and defensive lineman DJ Reader are all listed as potential returnees.
Campbell is hopeful that the conclusion of the preseason will mark the return of several important players. "We're hoping the day after [this Saturday's preseason finale against the Steelers], I think we're going to get a lot of guys back," he stated. This includes Gibbs, who is expected to join the team in rigorous preparations leading up to the game against the Rams. "So, we're about to get a whole group of guys back, hopefully Sunday," Campbell added.
Looking Ahead
The anticipation of having Gibbs back in the lineup is palpable. "And then they'll get next week's practice before we get ready for the Rams and then we do Rams practice. So, Gibbs falls into that boat," Campbell explained. The Lions are set to enter a critical phase of training, focusing on game readiness and ensuring that returning players are fully integrated and fit for their season opener.
With the team's final preseason game on the horizon, the Lions' coaching staff and fans alike are watching closely, hoping to see a preview of the squad's full capabilities. The return of key players like Gibbs could significantly influence the team's performance and set the tone for a successful season ahead.
