Former NFL wide receiver and return specialist Jacoby Jones passed away peacefully at his home in New Orleans on Sunday, just days after celebrating his 40th birthday. Jones, known for his electrifying performances on the field, particularly during the Baltimore Ravens’ 2012 Super Bowl triumph, leaves behind a legacy filled with memorable plays and personal connections.
Jones was a pivotal figure in the Ravens’ 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII. He recorded the longest kickoff return in Super Bowl and postseason history with a stunning 108-yard touchdown. In the same game, he showcased his versatility by hauling in a 56-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Flacco, contributing to his record-setting 290 total yards in the Super Bowl. His performance remains etched in NFL history and the hearts of Ravens fans.
Reflecting on his remarkable achievements, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh expressed his deep admiration: “I loved Jacoby Jones, we all did. His spirit, enthusiasm, and love for people were powerful. He was a light. He was the cherished son of his loving mom, Ms. Emily. They were so close. He was a man of faith. My favorite Jacoby personal moment was every time I saw his smiling face full of joy. Rest in peace, Jacoby, in the arms of Jesus.”
Jones began his NFL journey with the Houston Texans, who drafted him in the third round in 2007. Spending his first five NFL seasons in Houston, he set the franchise record for career punt return average at 10.2 yards. His prowess on special teams earned him a reputation as one of the league’s most dynamic return specialists.
In 2012, Jones joined the Baltimore Ravens, where he reached the zenith of his career. His contributions on special teams and as a receiver earned him First-Team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl selection. Jones also holds the Ravens’ records for the highest career kickoff return average (30.1 yards) and the highest single-season kickoff return average (30.7 yards in 2012).
The Ravens, mourning the loss of their former star, issued a heartfelt statement: “We are completely heartbroken to learn about the passing of Jacoby Jones. Jacoby had the unique ability to connect with everyone he encountered. His charisma, joy, and love created a one-of-a-kind presence that could light up any room or brighten any dark day. Jacoby will long be remembered not just for his success on the football field, but for the lasting personal connections he made with countless people in the Ravens organization, Baltimore community, and every area he called home. We share our deepest condolences with Jacoby’s family as we all begin to process this devastating loss.”
Jones’ impact extended beyond the Ravens. After leaving Baltimore, he had brief stints with the Chargers and Steelers in 2015. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin shared his sorrow: “My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of Jacoby Jones during this difficult time. I enjoyed coaching him during his time with the Steelers.”
Following his retirement in 2016 as a Raven, Jones transitioned to a coaching role, becoming the head coach for the Beaumont Renegades football club in Beaumont, Texas. Sam Gordon, owner of the Beaumont Renegades, fondly remembered Jones: “He was the best, he loved everyone. I think one of the most important things is he was a man of God. He was proud of how much he loved and feared his God. What was most important to him after football was helping the next person in line. He was the most humble and kind person to anybody who gave him the time and needed the time from him.”
Jones’ legacy is marked by his contributions on the field and his character off it. He is survived by his son, also named Jacoby, and his mother, Emily. The NFL Players Union, speaking on behalf of the Jones family, joined the chorus of condolences, underlining the deep sense of loss felt throughout the football community.
Jacoby Jones’ career, characterized by record-breaking performances and his ability to inspire both teammates and fans, ensures that his memory will live on. His remarkable journey from a third-round draft pick to a Super Bowl hero is a testament to his talent, determination, and the indelible impact he made on the NFL. As those who knew and loved him continue to honor his legacy, Jones’ story remains a shining example of excellence and humanity in the world of sports.
