Breaking Barriers: Jessica Campbell Joins the Seattle Kraken Coaching Staff

In a historic move for the National Hockey League (NHL), Jessica Campbell has been appointed to the Seattle Kraken coaching staff, marking a significant milestone as the first woman to serve as a full-time coach in the league's history. Campbell’s journey, adorned with various groundbreaking moments, is a testament to her dedication and expertise in hockey coaching.

From Captain to Coach

Campbell’s career in hockey has been illustrious from the start. Serving as team captain during the inaugural Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) All-Star Game in the 2014-15 season, she showcased her leadership qualities early on. Her journey took a pioneering turn in 2022 when she became the first woman to coach in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

Her role with the Firebirds was pivotal, particularly in managing the team’s power play. Campbell’s coaching prowess was further highlighted when Tye Kartye, who was under her mentorship, won the 2023 AHL Dudley "Red" Garrett Award for the most outstanding rookie. Kartye scored 20 points, including 11 goals and nine assists, over 77 games for the Kraken, a testament to Campbell's effective coaching.

A Specialist in Player Development

Jessica Campbell’s ability to nurture talent has not gone unnoticed. Kraken coach Dan Bylsma remarked on her commitment to player development during their tenure with Coachella Valley. “During our tenure in Coachella Valley, I saw firsthand Jessica's commitment to player development. Her ability to establish relationships with her players, specifically Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, was an important factor in this hire. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level,” Bylsma commented.

Her track record extends beyond the AHL. Campbell was the first woman to coach a men’s national team during the 2022 IIHF Men’s World Championship with Team Germany, where she also worked closely with Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer. Additionally, her expertise as a power-skating coach has benefited athletes like Natalie Spooner and Joel Edmundson, further cementing her reputation as a skillful developer of talent.

A Humbling Achievement

Campbell’s appointment to the Kraken coaching staff came as a welcome milestone for her. Reflecting on her journey, she stated, “I just focused on the task at hand in coaching, but absolutely, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity and I'm honored to be where I am and to be -- it's a humbling feeling to be a part of the Kraken organization.” Her approach to coaching is marked by a dedication to hard work and a growth mindset. “For me, that's what it's about. Just putting my head down and doing the work. You know, where it takes me it takes me, but I'm obviously honored to be on this path and continue to just do the good work that it takes to hopefully reach that goal,” she added.

Campbell’s commitment to her coaching philosophy is unwavering. She noted, “I'm a big believer in just keeping a growth mindset every day. Obviously, my goal is to continue to coach at the highest level, but timelines aren't necessary for me and definitely not where my focus is.”

Looking Forward

As the Seattle Kraken prepare for future seasons, Campbell’s role will likely involve heading the team’s power play, tapping into her vast experience and strategic acumen. Her influence is expected to foster further growth in players like Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, continuing the development work she excelled in with the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

Additionally, the Seattle Kraken have signed the 2024 Stanley Cup champion Brandon Montour, bringing even more depth to the team as they build toward the upcoming season. The integration of such experienced and skilled personnel signifies the Kraken’s commitment to not only making history but also driving towards a highly competitive and successful presence in the NHL.

With Jessica Campbell’s groundbreaking appointment and her proven track record in player development, the Seattle Kraken are poised for a new chapter, brimming with potential and fueled by a pioneering spirit.
