Coaching Staff Changes
The New Jersey Devils have officially announced the completion of their coaching roster. Head coach Sheldon Keefe has brought on Jeremy Colliton, aiming to solidify the team's strategic direction and bolster their performance in the upcoming season.
Tom Fitzgerald, the president and general manager, revealed the new arrangement on Tuesday. This announcement follows Keefe's hiring less than three weeks ago after he left the Toronto Maple Leafs to join the Devils. Keefe has retained a majority of the interim coaching staff, a move that promises a stabilized approach for the next season.
Travis Green had been serving as the interim coach towards the end of the last season, stepping in after Lindy Ruff was dismissed in early March. The continuity among the coaching staff is expected to create a cohesive environment, with assistants Ryan McGill, Chris Taylor, and Sergei Brylin all returning, as well as goaltending coach Dave Rogalski. This stability is anticipated to positively impact the team's performance.
Jeremy Colliton's Background
Jeremy Colliton joins the Devils with a wealth of coaching experience. He coached the Abbotsford Canucks in the AHL for the past two seasons, leading the team to commendable records and playoff appearances. Colliton also has valuable experience from his time with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he served as head coach for parts of four seasons. At age 33, he became the NHL's youngest head coach, achieving a record of 87-92-26 with the Blackhawks. Additionally, he coached their AHL affiliate in Rockford.
Colliton's international coaching experience includes a stint in Sweden's second league from 2013 to 2017, as well as coaching Team Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympics after replacing Claude Julien due to injury. Although Team Canada did not secure a medal, Colliton’s diverse coaching history makes him a strategic addition to the Devils' coaching staff.
Playing Background
Before transitioning to coaching, Colliton was a professional ice hockey player. He was drafted in the second round of the 2003 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders and played as a center for six seasons within the organization. His career includes 57 NHL games with three goals and three assists.
Colliton's dual experience as both player and coach equips him with a unique perspective and the ability to nurture talent and foster growth within the team. His track record suggests that he will be a valuable asset in the Devils' pursuit of success in the upcoming season.
Looking Ahead
The New Jersey Devils and their fans are eagerly anticipating the changes and improvements these coaching adjustments will bring. Keefe and Colliton, leveraging their expertise, are focused on propelling the team to new heights in the NHL. With a strategically assembled coaching staff, the Devils aim to compete vigorously and make significant strides this season.
