Matt Riddle Eyes a Return to MMA
As the combat sports world continues to evolve, one name that might re-emerge from the annals of mixed martial arts (MMA) is Matt Riddle. The 37-year-old former UFC fighter and professional wrestler has hinted at a potential return to the ring or cage in 2024.
Talking with Promotions
In a conversation with MMA Junkie, Riddle expressed his ongoing discussions with various fighting organizations, though he refrained from divulging specifics. "There's been a lot of talk. I've been talking to a couple of promotions," Riddle stated. "I don't want to get into it until it's official, but I think in 2024 there's a very big possibility that I get back in the ring or cage pretty soon." This statement has sparked speculation across the fight community about where Riddle could potentially make his comeback.
Potential Offers on the Table
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported that Riddle may be considering offers from bare-knuckle fighting promotions and the Professional Fighters League (PFL). These opportunities indicate a diverse interest in Riddle's return to combat sports, showcasing his crossover appeal between professional wrestling and MMA.
Riddle's MMA History
Riddle's last appearance in an MMA bout was in February 2014 when he faced Michael Kuiper at Titan FC. Before transitioning to professional wrestling, he had a stint in the UFC where he left on a four-win streak in 2013 after a victory over Che Mills. However, two of those wins were later overturned due to failed drug tests for marijuana, which led to criticism from UFC President Dana White.
Despite the controversy, Riddle reflects positively on his departure from the UFC. "I have to thank Dana, because if he were to just fire me and not say anything, nobody probably would've known about me," Riddle acknowledged. He believes White's public criticism inadvertently helped him build the relatable 'bro' character that would become a cornerstone of his professional wrestling persona.
A Free Agent with Options
Currently a free agent, Riddle has the flexibility to navigate his career path. His tenure in professional wrestling began in 2014, and by 2015, he made his debut in the squared circle. Riddle's charisma and athletic prowess quickly earned him accolades and championships in various independent promotions before joining WWE NXT in 2018.
During his time with NXT, he captured the Tag Team Championship alongside Pete Dunne. His success continued as he ascended to the main roster, claiming the United States Championship in February 2021. Alongside Randy Orton, Riddle formed the popular tag team "RK-Bro," becoming a two-time Raw Tag Team Champion.
Staying Fight-Ready
Despite his wrestling schedule, Riddle maintains a regimen that keeps him combat-ready, practicing martial arts multiple times a week. His dedication is evidenced by his status as a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. Riddle's presence at high-profile boxing events like the Jake Paul vs. Andre August match in Orlando hints at his continued interest in the fight scene.
Looking Forward
When reflecting on his combat sports journey, Riddle remains open-minded about his future. "I never say never," he commented. "If the opportunity is right. I don't really hold a grudge." His pragmatic approach leaves the door open for various possibilities, including reconciling with past promoters or exploring new ventures.
Riddle also contemplates his legacy and the nature of competition. "I feel like I left the UFC on a four-fight win streak, then won another fight in Titan FC. I just kind of left and went to pro wrestling," he said. "I did good [and am] still doing it. Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?"
With Riddle's potential return to MMA looming on the horizon, fans and fighters alike are watching closely to see what the next chapter holds for the multifaceted athlete. Whether he steps back into the cage or continues to entertain in the wrestling ring, Riddle's competitive spirit and versatility ensure that he will remain a compelling figure in the world of combat sports.
